Yamunotri is a source of River Yamuna as well as the seat of the Goddess Yamuna. It is one of the four sites of Char Dham pilgrimage in India. The holy shrine of Yamunotri is located opposite to Gangotri at a height of 3615m. In Garhwal Himalayas, the shrine of Yamunotri is the western most shrine. Mainly Yamunotri is very much famous for the glaciers as well as for the most significant halt in the journey of Chardham Yatra. According to the legends, Asit Muni used to exist here in this important holy place. As per the Hindu mythology, Yamunotri has an important place. There are also hot springs in the nearby places of Yamunotri. Here you will get the opportunity that hoe the devotees offer their prayer to the shrine of Yamunotri. Here the Devotees use to prepare rice and potatoes in order to offer in the yamunotri shrine. They offer these things to yamunotri just by dropping them in the hot water springs after tying them in muslin cloth. The trek of Yamunotri is very stunning and it is not possible for everyone to reach comfortably there. The trek of the Yamunotri includes some rough peaks as well as dense forests. From Rishikesh it is 213 kms and usually from Rishikesh the devotees come to Hanuman chatty which is a place located at 13kms from Yamunotri Dham and from here the devotees have to cover the distance on foot. You can also take the services of porters, palanquins and ponies to cover the 13kms distance and to reach Yamunotri.
The best time to visit this holy place is between May-October. If you make your plan to visit yamunotri in the month of late june to august, then you might face obscurity in reaching this holy place due to heavy rainfall. So the best time period to visit Yamunotri is during May to June and from September to November.Yamunotri is also associated with some of the important tourist attractions like:
Yamunotri Temple: it is a place of worship and attracts lots of tourists every year. Here there is an ancient temple of Yamunotri which was built in 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur.
Kharsali: it is a picnic spot in Yamunotri, which is located in a village and at a distance of 1 km from Yamunotri. Among the travelers it is a popular spot which is famous for its natural beauty also.
Divya Shila: it is a pillar, which is visited by each and every devotee before entering the Yamunotri temple.
Hanuman Chatty : it is famous as a popular trekking spot, especially among the trekking lovers.
Thousands and thousands of people visit Yamunotri every year. It is connected comfortably with road. You can also get to this place by arriving at the nearest air port and railway station and from there hiring a taxis or any bus to reach this holy place. The nearest airport is at Dehradun which is 196kms from Yamunotri, the nearest railway station is at Dehradun, Rishikesh but to hire a bus is also very comfortable.
