3 activities not to miss in Mauritius

Mauritius with its warm weather beckons you to the great outdoors. Who wants to spend time in stuffy museums and galleries instead? The climate in Mauritius all year round lends itself to some having a lot of fun outside in an active way. Here are 3 common activities anyone can do but which you want to make the most of during your stay in Mauritius.

Swimming

It’s not difficult to come up with swimming as a physical activity if you come to Mauritius for its famed beaches. If you are used to swimming in a swimming pool back home, how would you expect swimming in the sea to be different?

In general, waves at sea make swimming harder. But Mauritius is surrounded by coral reefs all around, which keeps the lagoon waters calm. In addition, the salty sea water makes you more buoyant, so you float more easily. You will therefore find swimming in sea water much less tiring than in the pool and you might even have to swim for longer, if you are an accomplished swimmer and wish to exhaust yourself.

Even if you don’t like swimming or you don’t know how to, the turquoise warm water of the lagoon is sure to tempt you to at least cool down a little in it. If for some reason, you don’t want to have contact with salt water, perhaps to protect your skin or hair, then most, if not all luxury hotels will have swimming pools.

Hiking

Another popular activity with many holidaymakers is hiking, especially if there is beautiful scenery to take in. but do you know where to go for that when on holidays in Mauritius? Walking along the beach does not count as hiking. Head to the Black River Gorges National Park for some truly fantastic and challenging walks where you will be able to climb mountains, descend into valleys and cool down in rivers and waterfalls. It is recommended you take a guide with you.
Another great hiking spot is the Valley Ferney in the south east, not far from the airport where you will land. This are was previously going to be cleared to make way for a motorway to ferry tourists like you but after passionate protests by the locals, the government has known turned it into a protected park due to the rare flora growing there. This is your chance to take all this in. there is a restaurant at the top and most people prefer to take a bus through the sugarcane fields to reach it but you will of course take a guide and hike your way there.

Cycling

Another top activity to do in Mauritius is cycling. Of course you can cycle everywhere so why Mauritius? Because cycling is a good way to take in a larger area of your surrounding than you would have been able to on foot. The warm weather and smooth roads in great conditions make it and enjoyable activity too. If you ride in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of the towns and villages, you will not encounter much traffic either.

So here are 3 activities you cannot afford to avoid if you want to enjoy your time in Mauritius in an active way. You now know what to expect from a swim in the lagoon, where to go hiking and why you should ride a bike.
