Walt Disney World antenna toppers

There’s nothing that says “I just got back from Disney World” like a Walt Disney World antenna topper, which might explain why so many Orlando residents have one perched atop their own automobiles. Local residents and visitors alike can find an antenna topper to suit every personality and time of year, from pirates to princesses, Christmas to the Fourth of July, or even miniature sized mouse ears that are best suited as key chains.

The Mickey Mouse ears used to be the distinguishing characteristic for these iconic souvenirs, although in recent years Disney has had more of an “anything goes” attitude—as long as it is family friendly—towards the shape of the antenna topper. Just about every gift shop at Walt Disney World sells antenna toppers, but the selection changes park by park and season by season. The biggest selection of toppers can be found at the World of Disney gift shop in Downtown Disney. With a price less than $10, consider getting more than one antenna topper if you won’t be back to Disney for a while—and always remember to remove your WDW souvenir before going through a car wash!

Dubai World Cup

As 11 of the world’s leading thoroughbreds stepped onto Dubai’s refurbished Nad Al-Sheba racecourse on 27 March 1996, one of racing’s most ambitious dreams came true. The brainchild of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai World Cup is a fitting tribute to his love of horses and of horseracing.

For more than two decades, horse owners and breeders from the Arab world have worked to establish the Arab presence in international thoroughbred racing, not only by winning top trophies in the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan, among others, but also by bringing world-class racing and breeding back to the Arabian Peninsula, the home of the thoroughbred’s renowned ancestor, the Arabian.

Horse racing began in the Emirate in October 1981, when the dusty Camel Track hosted the first thoroughbred. The race meeting consisted of three races - a sprint, a mile and a mile and a half. Just over a decade later in 1992, the now world-famous racing stable Godolphin began, followed by the inaugural Dubai World Cup meeting in 1996.

The initial Dubai World Cup racemeeting put the United Arab Emirates on the map, as it has become the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and has drawn the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe.

The standard was set and history was made by the American ‘wonder horse’ Cigar, when he claimed the first Dubai World Cup. Cigar appeared to be in trouble when from last came Soul of the Matter who began to cut into Cigar’s lead. Like all true champions, Cigar called upon extra reserves and defied his rival in the final 200m. Described as a heroic battle, this encounter indeed set the benchmark for all future renewals.

With the establishment of the annual invitation-only Dubai World Cup, the United Arab Emirates became the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and drew the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe. Among the horses entered in the inaugural race was a 13-time winner from Australia, a seven-race winner from Great Britain, the ‘dirt horse’ champion from Japan, and Cigar, North America’s ‘Horse of the Year’ for 1995.

Reflective of the overwhelming generosity of the UAE and embodying the warmth of traditional Arabian hospitality, contenders for the purses are flown in from all corners of the world, such as North and South America, South Africa, South East Asia, Australasia and Europe, and horsemen enjoy generous travel subsidies for their support of racing in the UAE.

To celebrate the 15th renewal of the Dubai World Cup and opening of the iconic Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse an extension of the programme was recently announced, and the Dubai World Cup meeting will now stage eight races, with the addition of the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, a 1200m turf race worth US$1 million.

The meeting, traditionally taking place at the end of March is now worth a staggering US$26.25 million, is not just about the world’s richest race, as the rest of the eight-race card is also stacked with quality.

The Dubai World Cup, now worth US$10 million, is classified as a ‘Group 1 Flat Race’ previously run on dirt for four-year-old thoroughbreds and above, and spans a distance of 2000m (one mile, two furlongs). 2010 marks the first year this race will be run on Tapeta.

Chief supporting races are the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free and the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic - the two richest races run on turf, anywhere in the world. The newest addition to the card is the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, worth US$1 million, to be run over 1200m on turf. Also on the card are the Dubai Golden Shaheen and UAE Derby, both worth US$2 million, and the US$1 million Godolphin Mile, while the evening kicks off with the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Perhaps part of the Dubai World Cup’s success is not only due to the state-of-the-art race track, but the burgeoning status of Dubai as an international crossroads and global transport hub, and of course a first-class tourist destination, evidenced by more than 50,000 racegoers attending the Dubai World Cup meeting each year.

Getting There

The Dubai World Cup is hosted at the Meydan Racecourse, Al Meydan Road, Nad Al Sheba.

Coming from Dubai - from the Sheikh Zayed Road, please take the 2nd interchange and turn left onto Al Meydan Road and follow the signs to Meydan Racecourse and The Meydan Hotel.
Coming from Abu Dhabi – from the Sheikh Zayed Road, please take the 2nd interchange and turn right onto Al Meydan Road, and follow the signs to Meydan Racecourse and The Meydan Hotel.

Hotel operations also play a lead role for a successful business. Some hoteliers endeavor to be focused through improving specific departments operations where as some other try to improvise with a hotel-broad approach, some forms of quality assurance service has also been executed through some hotels and companies. However, two important areas that receive the attention by the bureaucrats were maintenance and the front-desk; learn shows that through improvising in the operations hotels have experienced the boost up the visitors and also providing the worker satisfaction along by the development of profit as well.

Front office hotel management is responsible for setting up reservations and handling out room assignment, and they will ensure that any customer service problems will be handled properly. Some of these professionals are called services managers, and they will have the responsibility of coordinating meetings and conventions within an establishment.

Most lodging managers will work 40 hours a week in a fairly low stress job, while managing conferences and handling difficult clients can be testing. Night and weekend work is quietly general depending on the size of lodging establishment.

Income management is also playing a lead role in the success of any hotel. Aggressive Revenue is always a good practice and it has to be balanced with how the hotels generally manage their guests. Working with loyalty is always superior to get a higher growth then charging some higher rates from certain group of customers or trying to overbook the rooms just to make sure less then full occupancy. These practices always hamper the loyalty of the customers and shame the hotel's reputation as well.

Although on the outside this might look like an easy thing to do, actually, it is truly an art form and learning to master it is key to landing a dream hotel management job. A truly great hotel manager is capable to motivate in their workers a feel great longing to do extremely well and will make them want to do their best to make the hotel where they work as a nice place to visit as possible.

Dubai Museum

The Dubai Museum is a must see for everyone who comes to Dubai. This is a lively interactive museum with working models and lifesize displays portraying various aspects of Dubai life: a bustling market, an Islamic school, the desert at night and sealife in the Gulf.

Established in 1970, the museum is housed in the imposing 19th century Al Fahidi fort. The Al Fahidi Fort, was built around 1799, and once guarded the landward approaches to the town. Thought to be the city’s oldest building, the fort was both the residence of Dubai’s rulers and the seat of government until it was retired as a museum in 1971. It was renovated in 1970 for use as a museum; further restoration and the addition of galleries was completed in 1995.

Colorful and evocative dioramas, complete with life-size figures and sound and lighting effects, vividly depict everyday life in pre-oil days at the museum. Galleries show scenes from the Creek, traditional Arab houses, mosques, the souk, date gardens, desert and marine life. One of the most interesting exhibits portrays the underwater world of pearl-diving, including sets of pearl merchants’ weights, scales and sieves.

The main fort is a fascinating military museum. The museum also displays a fine collection from ancient history including copper, alabaster and pottery artefacts found in graves up to 4,000 years.

In recent years, archaeologists have unearthed hundreds of artefacts, including pottery, weapons and coinage, that point to civilised settlements dating back to the third millennium B.C. These historic finds have been carefully preserved and are now permanently housed in the Archaeological section of the Museum.

The museum is open from 8:30am to 7:30pm (Sat-Thu) and Fridays from 2pm hrs to 7:30 hrs.

Please contact the museum directly to confirm timings at telephone 3531862 .

Golf courses in Dubai

Emirates Golf Club

That was the name given to the Emirates Golf Club, Dubai when it became the first all-grass championship golf course in the gulf region, way back in 1988. And so it remains to this day, even though many have followed in its footsteps. His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's brainchild still inspires awe amongst all who play its verdant green golf courses, as well as those who simply visit its unique and ageless clubhouse.

The ageless design of clubhouse reflects a Bedouin tented village with seven gleaming white concrete and glass structures, complemented by the natural look of the off-course areas of the golf course, where desert flora and fauna have flourished and established themselves over the years.

The traditions of Arabia are not restricted to the design of the clubhouse. The oldest tradition of all – Arabian hospitality - is the foundation upon which the successful development and reputation of Emirates Golf Club has been built. For members and visitors alike, a welcome unmatched anywhere in the world, is guaranteed.

Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club

Situated in the heart of the city on the shores of the Creek, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a golfers’ paradise. The club’s 18-hole, par 71 course rolls 6,857 undulating yards along well-groomed fairways lined with date and coconut palms, water hazards and shrubbery that lend a distinctly tropical air. The course boasts a new front nine, re-designed by Thomas Bjƶrn, and remodelled tees, greens and topography on the back nine, providing a challenge for residents and tourists alike.

The Creek’s Golf Academy offers a nine-hole Par 3 course in addition to a spacious driving range and putting, chipping and bunker practice greens, with all facilities floodlit until 10.00pm. The Montgomerie

Combining the course design traditions of truly great Scottish links courses; The Montgomerie Dubai is the new jewel of golf courses in the United Arab Emirates. Covering more than two hundred acres, this spectacular golf course provides the player with undulating "links land" style fairways which challenge and intrigue all levels of player. Placement of the drive to the generous fairways remains the cornerstone of any good round. The flat landing area of each fairway can be challenging to find, but in the end a rewarding adventure.

With fourteen lakes and eighty one bunkers, The Montgomerie Dubai, this first example of the association between golfing great Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead adds a distinctive variety to the golfing landscape of the region. One of the signature hole designs, the par three thirteenth, boasts the largest single green in the world. With a total area of 58,000 sq feet - the equivalent of nine greens - its island green can be played from a 360 degree teeing ground giving the advantage of a totally different golf hole each time you play.

With such pedigree ingredients, the experience at The Montgomerie Dubai will add the garnish to the most extravagant golfing destination in the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai Country Club

Situated on land donated by the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the club was established by the members for the members. In 1971 the Country Club was proud to see history made when it became home to the first ever golf course in Dubai.

In 1977 the exceptional 18 hole Al Awir sand course was used to host the first Men's Open Golf championships and in 1980 the first Ladies Open was held. Both open competitions are still the highlight of the golfing calendar today and are widely supported by many of the top amateurs and professionals from around the world.

The Al Awir desert course is extremely challenging and very long, 6477 yds in total. It often plays longer than its yardage due to the fact that the ball does not run very far and can usually be found in its own pitch mark! As with any desert course the wind is a major factor and can change at the drop of a hat so no two days are the same and the shifting sands can alter the best laid game plan.

The Al Awir desert course must be on any golfers “to play” list when in Dubai as this is where the history of golf began in the United Arab Emirates.
