Wizarding World of Harry Potter to open in spring 2010

Earlier this month Universal Orlando announced that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter--billed as a theme park within a theme park--would officially open at Islands of Adventure during spring 2010. The grand opening is expected to be one of the biggest new attractions to come to Orlando since SeaWorld opened the Aquatica waterpark in 2008.

Some of the featured attractions include a ride called "Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey," which would be included in the Hogswarts Castle being constructed for the upcoming Harry Potter area at Islands of Adventure. Other highlights include a recreation of Hogsmeade village, a magic shop selling Quidditch equipment (the game most favored by wizards in training at Hogwarts) and a facelift for the Lost Continent coasters. Dueling Dragons is set to become Dragon Challenge and the Flying Unicorn coatser will become the Flight of the Hippogriff.

With a loyal following on both sides of the Atlantic, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is expected to be a big hit with American and British tourists. When the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been completed, it will cover 20 acres within the Islands of Adventure theme park at the Universal Orlando resort.

Big changes in store for Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland

Fantasyland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom will be undergoing its biggest renovation since the park opened in 1971, with new rides, more princesses, and a few fairies.

While favorite attractions such as the signature Cinderella Castle, Cinderella's Golden Carousel and the Mad Tea Party will remain in place, the Disney Princesses will be even more front-and-center as Disney adds a new ride based on Ariel in The Little Mermaid, and an even greater emphasis on Cinderella, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and Belle (Beauty and the Beast). The Ariel ride, using a working title of "Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid" is also being constructed at Disney's California Adventure Park. There will also be a new Beast's Castle that will include a restaurant called Be Our Guest, from the song made famous by the Beauty and the Beast movie.

According to Disney officials, the Dumbo attraction will be relocated and expanded to include a three-ring circus grounds around the popular ride, while Tinker Bell and the other fairies of Pixie Hollow will have a new, larger meet and greet area for photos. The Pixie Hollow fairies were introduced last year in a meet and greet area adjacent to Mickey's Toontown Fair.

Well known for its storybook characters and tie-in to classic Disney movies, the Fantasyland refurbishment is scheduled for completion by 2013, although the Mermaid ride and princess areas are scheduled to open as early as 2012. Most of Mickey's Toontown Fair will be razed to accommodate the new attractions, or re-themed to match the new Fantasyland expansion.

Yak and Yeti Restaurant at Animal Kingdom

Just a short walk from the Expedition Everest roller coaster at Disney's Animal Kingdom, the Yak and Yeti Restaurant serves up Asian cuisine that is suitable for patrons who are on the go or wish to enjoy a sit-down meal.

The two-story restaurant features traditional dishes such as vegetable lo mein, pork egg rolls and pot stickers, sweet and sour chicken or pork, stir fried beef and broccoli and wonton soup. Children 9 and under can choose from egg rolls, lo mein, chicken bites, or a mini burger.

Walt Disney World food favorites

Walt Disney World offers a wide variety of dining experiences throughout its theme parks on resorts, from fast bites to opulent dining and everything in between. While all of the restaurants and eateries have that Disney touch, there are at least two menu items found at the theme parks and water parks that are unique to Disney, namely, the smoked turkey legs and Mickey Mouse premium ice cream bars.

The smoked turkey legs are found at the small vendor booths in various locations throughout the Disney parks. A single smoked turkey leg can easily feed an adult and child--together. By marinating the legs in a salty brine, the dark meat takes on a rich flavor, much like a well cured ham. The turkey legs weigh about 1.5 pounds and Disney sells at least 1 million turkey legs per year. Although you can walk through the park enjoying your very own turkey, sometimes it's best to tackle the oversized piece of poultry sitting down.

The Mickey Mouse premium ice cream bars (or "Mickey bars" as they are described by the children who search them out) have creamy vanilla ice cream wrapped in a thick coating of chocolate, much like a Dove bar that can be bought at a local grocery store--except the Disney version has the trademark ears. It's also big enough for an adult and child to share together, although any child with a sweet tooth might not feel like sharing.

Walt Disney World will soon be recruiting moms (and dads) from across the country for their 2010 Walt Disney World Moms Panel, with applications being accepted after 9:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 10, 2009. Thousands will apply, and less than two dozen will be chosen to give their unique insight into where to go and what to see at the “happiest place on Earth.”

Parents who serve on the Moms Panel do not receive a salary for serving their 12 month term, but they get a trip to Walt Disney World in return for their services answering online questions from other Disney World travelers. The panelists must complete at least 15 responses per week to the submitted questions. According to the Disney Web site, the panelists are selected “because they have demonstrated an excellent knowledge of Walt Disney World® Resort. Being familiar with the Parks, Resort hotels, dining and entertainment, shopping, and recreational activities, they can offer the help and tips you need to make your vacation planning a snap.”

La Cava del Tequila coming to Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion

Walt Disney World's latest dining (and drinking) experience is the La Cava del Tequila at Epcot's Mexico Pavilion. La Cava del Tequila will feature more than 70 types of tequila, and a “Tequila Ambassador” will be on site to educate guests about tequila’s importance to Mexico and the art of tequila making.

The beverages served at La Cava del Tequila will include specially mixed margaritas (where tequila is the key ingredient) and tapas style foods will also be available, such as including freshly made guacamole, corn tortilla chips, salsas, ceviches and tostadas.

Tequila is a product of the agave plant and its origins go back to the 16th century. The Aztec people had their own version of a fermented agave drink before the Spanish conquistadors arrived and began to distill their own version of it, making tequila the first indigenous distilled spirit in North America.

The Mexico Pavilion at Epcot is best known for its entrance in the shape of an Aztec-era temple and the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros ride. The San Angel Inn restaurant is located right by the ride’s entrance.

Medieval Times offering free kids’ admission until Sept. 7

Now until September 7, Medieval Times in Kissimmee, FL is offering one free child/teen (18 and under) admission free with the purchase of a regular, full-priced adult admission. The price of an adult ticket is $59.95 (+tax) and the price of a child’s ticket (12 and under) is normally $38.95 (+tax).

Disney night of joy 2009

Multi-platinum Christian rock band P.O.D., currently on hiatus following a lengthy world tour, will make its 2009 concert debut as part of a 14-act lineup announced today for Disney’s Night of Joy Sept. 11-12 at Walt Disney World Resort. The musically diverse event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park also will feature MercyMe, newsboys, Skillet, Flyleaf, Chris Tomlin, Kutless, Jars of Clay, Grits, Leeland, NEEDTOBREATHE, Superchick, Mandisa and Family Force 5.

Seven acts will perform each evening between 7 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. at stage locations throughout the park. Night of Joy begins after regular park operating hours, with concerts and select park attractions available exclusively for the enjoyment of event ticket holders.
P.O.D. is among four acts new to Night of Joy (along with Grits, NEEDTOBREATHE and Family Force 5), joining a legacy of 134 Christian music acts that have played Night of Joy since 1983.

While a Disney “newbie,” the southern California-based band that fuses hard rock with hip-hop, reggae and Latin music is well known in music circles. They’ve been a hit on MTV, won two GMA Dove Awards, been Grammy-nominated, had two platinum-certified albums – one triple platinum – and in past summers played some of the north’s biggest Christian festivals.

But in spring/summer 2009, P.O.D. is chillin’: Vocalist Sonny Sandoval and the rest of the band are home in SoCal enjoying family life following a seven-month world tour that wound up in South America in December, making their Sept. 11 date at Disney P.O.D.’s first gig of the year.
“In the past year we’ve been blessed to play all around the globe but performing at Disney World excites me most of all,” Sandoval said. The complete Sept. 11 Night of Joy lineup: P.O.D., newsboys, Kutless, Tomlin, NEEDTOBREATHE, Leeland and Superchick. On Sept. 12, the Studios’ stages will present: Skillet, MercyMe, Jars of Clay, Flyleaf, Family Force 5, Grits and Mandisa.

Eight of the acts are nominated for Gospel Music Association Dove Awards in 2009, topped by Tomlin with seven nominations including artist of the year. Other nominees are Kutless, Leeland, NEEDTOBREATHE, Skillet, MercyMe, Mandisa and Grits. For Mandisa, Night of Joy will mark her second “guest appearance” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2009. On Feb. 12, she was among an unprecedented gathering of 27 “American Idol” finalists – including the winners from each of the show’s first seven seasons – who participated in a Hollywood gala-style event to premiere “The American Idol Experience.” The new attraction immerses guests in the excitement of the hit TV show “American Idol,” with some guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios auditioning to take the spotlight onstage, while fellow guests cheer them on from the audience and vote for their favorite singer with instant results.

With an innovative ticket – exclusively for groups of 10 or more – that combines a “day” visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Night of Joy admission that evening, guests will have a chance to participate in “The American Idol Experience.” And by booking on or before Aug. 12, the Studios day/Night of Joy group ticket costs just $44.95 plus tax (beginning Aug. 13, it costs $49.95).

There’s also a two-day ticket exclusively for groups of 10 or more that combines Night of Joy admission on both evenings (Sept. 11 and Sept. 12) with two “day visits” to the guest’s choice of Walt Disney World theme parks (one per day) on Night of Joy weekend (Sept. 11-13). Booked on/before Aug. 12, that ticket costs just $89.95 plus tax (beginning Aug. 13, it costs $99.95).
Night of Joy tickets for individuals also are available. One-night tickets purchased in advance (up to the day prior to the event) are $49.95 plus tax (on event day, if available, tickets are $54.95).
