Fifth Graders Skip School
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? At The First Academy, a Christ-centered college prep school in Orlando, Fl, the faculty was up to the challenge. They arranged a Sneak Day 2008 to celebrate the fifth graders "graduation" to middle school. The fifth graders, thinking it was just another day at school, were suddenly whisked away at 9 am in school buses to the Orange Lake Resort & Country Club for a day of fun, festivities, and lots of water. From some accounts, most of them did not suspect it and those who thought they knew had no idea. They had a blast swimming, playing, and just having great fun. They were served a buffet lunch with hot dogs, hamburgers, fruit, and the like; and each took home a towel with the resort logo and a towel back pack. The resort served as the perfect place to entertain these Middle School bound students. God bless them.

Toy Story Mania Opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
With a grand opening scheduled for May 31, Disney’s Hollywood Studios has already initiated its “soft opening” for Toy Story Mania, an interactive attraction that combines the old-fashioned fun of a carnival midway with the hi-tech adventures of Woody, Buzz, and other beloved Toy Story characters. Using the space that was formerly occupied by the “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” game, Disney Pixar’s Toy Story gang takes visitors on fun-filled 4-D adventure that will make this attraction one of the highlights of any visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
In many ways, Toy Story Mania takes the concept behind Magic Kingdom’s Buzz Lightyear ride and kicks it up a few notches. Riders must wear 3-D glasses to see the targets on the midway, while they pull on a spring-action shooter that launches virtual darts at balloons, rings at aliens, eggs at barnyard targets and much more. When time runs out on one game, the cars shift over to the next one, so players can continue testing their aiming skills and racking up points. Daily high scores are posted at the end of the ride.
With a new Block Party Bash Parade featuring characters from several Pixar movies and another Toy Story movie scheduled for theatrical release within the next year and a half, expect to see a lot more of Woody, Buzz and the gang around Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Rita Ortiz Brunet
Rita Ortiz Brunet, famed author of children's books, requested a special trip to Disney to get more ideas for her next story. This one will have a Pirates of the Caribbean theme but without skulls and crossbones. Her son Edgar, part-time blog writer for orlandoescape.com. served as a tour guide. We visited the Pirates of the Caribbean ride with new features that include appearance by Jack Sparrow, the main character of the latest Disney trilogy of the same. She stocked up on some pirates paraphernalia that she will use for the presentation of her book.
We also waited at least 45 minutes to see the updated Haunted mansion which, although pretty much the same ride, was retouched nicely. We had dinner at the Magic Kingdom's Tony's, an Italian theme restaurant at the entrance of Magic Kingdom, and shared a seafood pasta dish and an antipasto appetizer. Like everything nowadays at Disney, it was a little pricey but enjoyable nevertheless.
We discovered that in the castle they now have a boutique for young girls to be made up as princesses with makeup, glitter, sashes, and even costumes. Although my girls have outgrown the Princess stage, we saw some cute little girls all dressed up as princesses and proud of their of their appearance; very innovative on Disney's part. Service is still top notch at the park.
The park was crowded but I have seen worse. However, it provided a nice preview that his summer at Disney will be hot, and busy. I'll return in the fall after the peak season.
About Rita, at 71 she is still as active and energetic as ever. She is an active spelunker, camper, scuba diver, hiker, world traveler, and author of 11 children's books. She is featured frequently on Puerto Rican media outlets including TV and local newspapers and travels to many schools on the island. She has even been a special guest at the governor's mansion, La Fortaleza.

From The Matterhorn to Mt. Dora
You’ve done the theme parks, you got your mouse ears and seen every princess. For a break from all the crowds and lines, you may want to consider a jaunt to Mount Dora, a charming town just 45 minutes northwest of the hotels and theme parks. There’s plenty to do and see, and instead of a set of ears you can get a bumper sticker or a t-shirt that says “I climbed Mt. Dora.”
It’s an affectionate joke, of course, because this Central Florida town of about 10,000 residents may have some relatively small hills for flat central Florida, but the “mountains” in Mt. Dora are no higher than 184 feet above sea level.
Here visitors discover a small, bucolic New England-style town with antique shops, great food and wine and lovely parks.
For such a small town, Mt. Dora has perhaps more antique stores per resident than anywhere else. But even if antiques are not your thing, there are many more reasons to take a day trip to this town that has Central Florida’s more modest attractions—by theme park standards, anyway.
You might start your day with breakfast at Sunshine Mountain Bakery. Everything is baked on the premises. The coffee is excellent. Try anything from bagels to an asparagus and cheddar croissant. You can also buy a fresh loaf of bread for about the same price as you’ll find at Publix.
Energized by your freshly-baked breakfast, you can get an overview of what is here by hopping on the Road Trolley tours that depart from the Lakeside Inn. The cost is $12 for adults for an hour’s ride. You will see streets lined with white clapboard houses, art galleries, shops, ice cream parlors and upwards of two dozen small, family-run restaurants. There’s even a shop catering to Beatles fans.
For couples who are split on the subject of antiques and golf, one can stay downtown and browse, while the other can try the Country Club of Mount Dora. It has well-manicured greens framed by magnificent oaks and pines. Four of the courses’ 18 holes have dramatic lake views.
For hidden treasures, try Renninger’s Twin Markets, which is close to downtown. It is one of the largest flea markets in the Southeast and is often voted one of the top ten flea markets. You may not be able to tell the difference between a flea market and an antique market. If you can, then Twin Markets is perfect for you, because it’s both—offering authentic antiques and unique finds.
All that shopping can work up an appetite. For the health-conscious there’s the 5th Avenue Café. Mt. Dora’s only restaurant dedicated to organic cuisine is not just for the hippie crowd. Delicious dishes such as spicy calamari and warm cashew chicken salad are made from the freshest ingredients. There’s also a great selection of gourmet vegetarian and vegan dishes. Eat in or take your organic eats to an organic locale, like Mount Dora’s newest park, Cauley Lott Park on Highland Street. Or pack your basket and head over to one of the many parks surrounding Lake Dora. The town was named after Lake Dora, after all, and it’s a great backdrop for a picnic.
The upcoming “Old Fashioned 4th of July” celebration features Kids Fest, a day-long festival of face-painting, a water slide, pony rides and games.
The nearby Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards is an attraction in itself, surprising many visitors with the high quality of its sparkling champagne. It has complimentary wine tastes and tours seven days a week. Admission is free.
A 15-minute car trip and you are in Eustis, where you can ride an old-fashioned train. The Orange Blossom Dinner Train is a three-hour evening trip with a four-course dinner (the specialty is a terrific roast prime rib; other dishes to include a Conductor’s Chicken and a Rambling Rack of Lamb).
A great place to stop for a drink and inhale the European atmosphere is the Frosty Mug in the heart of downtown at the corner of 4th and Donnelly. And for something other than Italian, Mexican or Chinese, why not try the hearty Scandinavian dishes at the Icelandic Restaurant & Bar?
If you want to stay the night, there are several historic B & Bs, including the antique-filled Mount Dora Historic Inn, built in the 1880s. Alternatively, you can stay at the historic 88-room Lakeside Inn. Watch the sun go down while you sit on a white wicker rocking chair on the verandah overlooking the lake and sip on a cocktail. You’ll be joining several US presidents (Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower, among others) who found this a relaxing change of pace from the bustle of the busy world outside.

Military Discounts in the Orlando Area
When a family member is in the military, being able to spend time together on vacation is more important than ever. Fortunately, there are a number of ways that active military and government personnel can make their trip to the Orlando area more affordable.
Orlando area resorts such as the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center and the Sheraton Vistana Resort have special deals available for military/government personnel. Other area hotels also offer military discounts for select dates, so be sure to research the rates ahead of time.
In addition to discounted accommodations, there are U.S. military/Department of Defense discounts available for Disney cruises and theme parks. The theme park tickets, known as Stars and Stripes tickets, are sold at the Walt Disney World resort hotels and the Shades of Green resort at WDW built specifically for U.S. military/government employees and their families. Active military personnel and up to five members of their family are eligible for these discounted tickets. Anheuser-Busch’s Hero Salute program offers discounted tickets to members of the military for SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Tampa.
In all cases, a valid military/government ID is required upon hotel check-in or ticket purchase.

Orlando Restaurants, Tamboras Cafe Grill
Tamboras grill cafe is a nice small restaurant in Ocoee, open since December 2007. Although it is only 1.8 miles from our home, this is our first visit. It did not help that this cute little restaurant is in a cheesy retail strip across from West Orange theaters, a 1970's style movie theater on Maguire Road in Ocoee, and it still has the equally cheesy beer neon signs from a failed italian restaurant I am not sure ever opened.
Nevertheless, the ambiance was nice-it has a "I like what you have done to the place" feel to it with nice dark colors and pastels, soft music, etc; it is cozy and comfortable. The food, although pricey, showed potential, in spite of a churrasco that needed a steak knife to cut (the sauce was good) and a burnt espresso creme brulee. The mac and cheese was "too cheesy"-a recurrent theme in this blog- as determined by Central Florida's authority on this favorite kid's staple: my daughter Natalie.
Are we going back, maybe. If it is still there in December, then it it will mean it was good enough to survive high gas prices for folks to shed their discretionary income on a nice meal in Ocoee.

The theme park you don’t know
OK, you have arrived at the world’s largest tourist destination and are ready for some theme parking (yes, theme park has been turned into a verb). Armed with your tickets in hand, you and the family are ready for serious vacation activities. What do you do first?
Upon arriving at the theme park of your destination, grab a map and walk straight to the back of the park. Most visitors will walk in, utter something like, “Wow! Look at that!” and go to the first attraction they see, making the shows, rides and other points of interest near the entrance crowded in the early part of the day. Head for the rear and work your way forward. You’ll find shorter lines by doing it this way. Make sure to check the park guide for show times and hours of operation for attractions you don’t want to miss—some may close early or have limited runnings.
If you have a choice of two doors or separate lines, go toward the left. The left lines are always shorter. If the estimated time for waiting in line reads 45 minutes, don’t be discouraged. Routinely, the wait times are reported longer than they actually are so visitors will think it really wasn’t so bad after all.
Remember, not all theme park adventures happen inside the gates of the actual park. Fireworks are popular attractions at the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT Center. To guarantee an excellent view of the spectacles, don’t fight the crowds for a spot with limited vision. Book your own fireworks cruise. A private viewing can be arranged for small groups of eight to ten people. Pontoon boats glide across the waters of the Seven Seas Lagoon to take guests close to the Magic Kingdom’s Wishes fireworks. Or you can sail across the lake in the center of EPCOT’s World Showcase for an outstanding view of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. The price of the cruises varies depending on the number of people, size of the boat, and if any refreshments are requested. Participants may also ask for private dining onboard the boats.
For another water adventure, put on your blue blazer and ascot and play yachtsman for a day. The “Breathless Cruise” allows guests to rent a 1930 mahogany reproduction Chris Craft run-about boat. The boat has a six guest maximum and is available at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort. This cruise can be booked during Illuminations, or vacationers with a fondness for daytime cruising can rent it throughout the day.
Another option is to take a VIP Cruise on Grand I Yacht, a 45-foot Sea Ray yacht staffed by a captain and deckhand. Available at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the yacht offers a 13 guest maximum. Again, private dining is available if desired.
If you ride the Walt Disney World monorail, and almost all visitors do, go to the front and ask nicely if you can ride with the engineer. If no one else has beaten you to it, it’s a great view of the grounds and lot more fun than being crammed into a car with dozens of other tourists. You even get an official Walt Disney World Co-Pilot license as a souvenir.
But, for the ultimate in theme park adventures, be sure to take in some of the behind-the-scenes tours at Walt Disney World. There are about 17 such tours offered at any given time, (more during the holidays) ranging from “Living Seeds,” a 45-minute peek at EPCOT's huge greenhouses, to a seven-hour walk through three separate parks.
Participants can also swim with the sharks and other sea creatures at EPCOT’s Living Seas pavilion, glide on a private boat through the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise, ride a Segway around EPCOT, and get a real backstage glimpse behind the magic that makes everything work. For a real family treat, try a scavenger hunt in the Magic Kingdom. Some special tours allow guests to ask questions and get answers that are never heard in the mainstream tourist areas. Custom tours are also available.
For easy fun, look for Hidden Mickeys—the three circles that comprise the head and ears of the world’s most famous mouse. They can be found on the rides, in landscaping, concealed in the architecture—just about everywhere on Disney property. Some hotels offer contests to see who can find the most Hidden Mickeys.
Remember, theme parking is hard work. At almost any time of the day, exhausted tourists napping on benches throughout the parks are a common sight. Go to the parks early in the day and take a break from the afternoon heat. Go back to your room for a nap or a swim in the pool, and then return to the parks in the evening. Pace yourself, wear comfortable shoes, and enjoy your visit to the theme park capital of the world. And, go home with stories about a special experience no one else has ever imagined.

Splash Into Summer
By Nicole Naser
It’s day four of your week-long Orlando vacation. You’ve covered every inch of most of the major theme parks. You’ve stood in the hot Florida sun waiting for your turn on some major thrill rides while clutching your water bottles tightly. Now it’s time to cool down at Orlando’s soaking wet water parks.
Mind-numbing
With over 30 acres of giant slides, fast flumes, and world-class thrill rides, Wet n’ Wild should be high on your water park checklist.
The low-down on action: Brainwashing used to be a bad thing—until they turned it into a ride! Brain Wash plunges you 60 feet into a gigantic funnel where you’ll be climbing the walls again and again! Or you can help bring disco back on the Disco H2O—a four-person tube ride that sends you back to the ‘70s with groovy sounds and flashing lights.
Moving on… For more sports-type action, see how long you can last on a kneeboard as you’re pulled around a half-mile lake. Half the battle is in actually making it off the platform with your kneeboard!
What’s in it for the kids? Miniature versions of your favorite rides will keep the kids happy at the Kid’s Park. Older children can climb and bounce their way down Bubble Up, a huge inflatable bubble surrounded by three feet of water.
What’s colder than cold?
Not cooled down yet? I bet you never thought you’d see winter in Florida until you’ve been to Disney’s Blizzard Beach.
The low-down on action:
Only the bravest should shiver their way down Summit Plummet, the world’s tallest and fastest free-fall body slide. You’ll soar at 55mph down the snowy slopes of Mt. Gushmore. Then grab an inner tube and race down side-by-side speed slides on the Downhill Double Dipper. On the Slush Gusher, you can go with the flow on Mt. Gushmore’s slushy slopes.
Moving on…
Melt-away Bay is the place to seek refuge after a day of thrilling mountain chills. Take a swim, float along, or catch a waterfall or two.
If you want to see the entire park without moving a muscle, relax in an inner tube as Cross Country Creek carries you along.
What’s in it for the kids?
For the little ones, Tike’s Peak offers a snowy oasis of body slides, an inner tube ride, a wading pool, and frosty fountains. There’s also an area especially for pre-teens—Ski Patrol Training Camp.
Calm before the storm
Long before Blizzard Beach came along, there was Typhoon Lagoon. With so many diverse attractions in one water park, no wonder it’s considered one of the best!
The low-down on action:
You’ll be swimming with the sharks at Typhoon Lagoon’s Shark Reef. Head over to the Surf Pool for body-surfing or simple wave-jumping. You can even take surfing lessons in this giant wave pool before or after operating hours! For even more speed, try navigating the enclosed flumes of the Humunga Kowabunga, where you can’t see where you’re going till you get there!
Moving on…
The longest ride in the park, Mayday Falls, will send you through caves and waterfalls as you splash your way down a mountain. For some family fun, jump onto a giant, 4-person inner tube at Gang Plank Falls.
What’s in it for the kids?
Kid-sized adventure awaits at Ketchakiddee Creek, where kids can find mini-rapids, an interactive leaky tug boat, fountains, slides, watery whales and slippery seals.
Orlando’s Newest…
Orlando’s newest water park, Aquatica, puts Commerson’s dolphins right in the water alongside you.
The low-down on action:
For a thrill ride like no other, take the Dolphin Plunge. Race against black and white Commerson’s dolphins as you shoot down an enclosed tube on the most popular ride in the park. But for the biggest thrill, dive head-first down Taumata Racer, a high-speed competitive mat ride where you can race against seven other people!
Moving on…
This water park has a lazy river with a twist. If you swim across Loggerhead Lane to the island in the middle, you can climb a tower that leads to Tassie’s Twisters. From there, you’ll jet down a tube into a giant bowl for a dizzying spin before getting thrust back out into Loggerhead Lane.
What’s in it for the kids?
Kids can’t pass up the 60 foot tall rain fortress, Walkabout Waters. 15,000 square feet of interactive watery playground thrills will definitely keep little ones busy.
If you dare…
What’s more fun than gator wrestling? Getting soaked at Gator Gully Splash Park. Gatorland, the “Alligator Capital of the World,” has opened this unexpected water park as a place to cool down after a long day of gator interaction. Spreading out over a quarter of an acre, this watery wilderness features dueling water guns mounted on the backs of gators, a bucket tree, and giant egrets spilling water from their beaks. Not to mention all the additional animal exhibits! So if you want a unique water park with all the a chance to meet Florida’s native wildlife all in one, Gator Gully Splash Park is the place to be.
With all of Orlando’s thrill-filled water parks, you’ll be sure to beat Florida’s heat wave this summer.

Universal Rip-off!!
I recently took my daughter to City Walk for some father-daughter quality time. We planned to see a movie then walk around City Walk. However, I was shocked to see they charge $11 for parking even if one is going only to the movies or restaurants! They no longer validate your receipt at the concession stands. Nada. Zero. Zilch. You cannot even turn around and leave if you wanted to once your are in. To add insult to the injury of aggravation, I had to park in E.T. 579 lot which is like parking at home and walking over. Then, the exit of the park dumps miles away from where you entered on I-4. Needless to say I am not going back there ever again. No where else in Orlando do you pay $11 for parking to watch a movie Happily, I managed to have a good time with my daughter since she was just tickled it was her and I alone. Total expenses for the afternoon: $13.50 for movie tickets, $18.00 for games with prizes, $17.50 at the concession stand, and the dreaded $11 for parking. A spontaneous hug from my daughter: PRICELESS.
