Rainy Day Walt Disney World

During the summer months, the stifling heat of the mid-morning gives way to brief but powerful thunderstorms. For many, the rain is a welcome respite from the hot temperatures, and the water evaporates rather quickly, but Walt Disney World visitors might want to be prepared for these sudden downpours.

Walt Disney World is more than happy to sell visitors thin rain ponchos in the major gift shops, so even if you don’t want to be bothered by carrying around an umbrella, you do have an alternative to getting soaked. A large garbage bag also does the trick, especially if you are bringing your own stroller to the park, and end up parking it outside while you get in line for a ride (because that’s usually when the thunderstorm hits and soaks the stroller). To prevent this from occurring, cover the empty stroller with a garbage bag tarp ahead of time.

Central Florida is the lightning capital of the world, so the Disney water parks will shut down temporarily if there is any lightning in the area. This is for the safety of the guests, so get out of the water immediately if an announcement is made. Fortunately, a long and drawn out rainy day is a rare occurrence in the Sunshine State, and even on those days when you do get caught in the rain, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen.
