The uncertain fate of Lake Eola fountain

The water-spouting Lake Eola fountain in downtown Orlando appears on the city's street signs--but the fountain hasn't spurted out any water since it was zapped by lightning in late August 2009.

The current fountain was built in 1957, replacing an earlier fountain that was constructed in 1912. The fountain was in need of some repairs prior to the lightning strike, but the estimated repairs to fix this latest damage has a $1 million price tag, and the city's insurance policy on the fountain has a $500,000.

The city is still deciding on the fate of the Lake Eola fountain, since budget cutbacks make it difficult to afford repairs at this time. The City Beautiful motto still remains, but as for the fountain--stay tuned.

A Magic Kingdom tradition, the Liberty Tree Tavern restaurant is located in the Liberty Square area just steps away from the famed Hall of Presidents. Patterned after an 18th century New England inn, guests are greeted by servers in period costumes and are invited to dine on traditional American fare.

With a large hearth in the entryway, visitors will feel welcome in the Liberty Tree Tavern. The front porch is also an ideal spot to view Disney character parades and the nearby riverboat attraction.

The Princess and the Frog riverboat celebration

Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom theme park is putting on the finishing touches on the Liberty Square Riverboat, an authentic three-tiered paddlewheel steamship that circles the Magic Kingdom lagoon with a scenic half-mile tour of Frontierland, Liberty Square and Tom Sawyer island. In preparation for the upcoming animated film, The Princess and the Frog, the Liberty Square Riverboat is celebrating New Orleans style.

You don’t have to ride the riverboat to appreciate the colorful Mardi Gras inspired costumes and traditional Dixieland jazz that are a part of this musical celebration. With The Princess and the Frog premiering in theaters everywhere on December 11, there are sure to be more Princess Tiana sightings at the Magic Kingdom, as well as other areas of Walt Disney World.

Typhoon Lagoon closed for refurbishment in November and December

Starting November 1, 2009 Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon water park will be closed for annual refurbishments until January 10, 2010. Blizzard Beach will remain open during this time and close down temporarily for winter refurbishments when Typhoon Lagoon reopens.

During the cooler winter months, Walt Disney World always keeps one of the waterparks open while shutting down the other for approximately two months for annual maintenance. Typhoon Lagoon is located close to Downtown Disney and Blizzard Beach is in the Animal Kingdom area of the resort.

Orlando has been experiencing an unseasonably hot autumn this year, so a trip to an outdoor waterpark in November might actually be a refreshing change of pace for Orlando visitors, especially those from “Up North” who have already pulled out their heavy sweaters and winter jackets for the season.
