Nepal at a Glance

Nepal is a land locked country lying on the lap of the Himalayan Mountain Range crowned by the Everest, the highest peak of the world. The kingdom spread over valleys and terrains of varied altitude ranging between 100 to 4800 meters covering a vast area measuring 147,0000sq.kilometers, starting from the Himalayas on the north and extended to terrain of Bengal on the south.

The capital of Nepal is Katmandu which is situated almost at the centre of the state. Although Katmandu is the principal town and commercial centre, there are a few other towns which are important from the trade and tourism point of view. Hotel accommodations of good standard are available only in Katmandu.

Places of Interests

Apart from Katmandu some other places of interest are Pokhra which is famous for its high altitude lake which remains completely frozen during February and March. There are some national parks and gardens. The famous spots are Chitwan national park famous for its wild life sanctuary and the Sagar Matha National Park which is situated at the high altitude 8800 meters.

Climate

The climate of the state varies from place to place depending on its topographical condition. The northern part is generally cooler whereas the southern part is having sub-tropical climatic condition.

Population

Nepal is the home for 25 million people as per 2002 census. The majority of the citizens are followers of Hindu religion and culture. A small fraction of the population is the followers of Buddhism and Islamic religion. People here are very simple, religious and famous for their bravery. There are many groups and sub-groups among the people depending on their casts and ethnicity.

Language

Almost all people speak the Nepalese language although there are usages of few dialects among the tribes living in the hilly terrains. Nepali has been declared as the Official Language of the state. However, besides Nepali English is also used in Govt. and commercial establishments. English is also the medium of instruction in some schools at Katmandu.

Marriages

Marriages are generally arranged by the elders of the families. Child marriages were in vogue in the villages. But the new Government has taken steps to check this age-old custom and introduced the minimum age limit for marriage at 18 years for girls and 21 years for the boys.
