Disney World pressed coin machines

Pressed coins are a timeless and affordable pocket-sized souvenir. Pressed pennies cost 51 cents, and the slightly fancier pressed quarter machines cost $1.25. Whether they are hand operated or push button, all of the Orlando theme parks have their own pressed penny machines, with the vast majority of them in the Walt Disney World resort.

Pressed coin collectors can find these machines at the major gift shops where the rides empty out, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Magic Kingdom or the Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Stand alone gift shops throughout Disney World also have coin machines, and some coin machines are where you least expect them—a few yards away from restroom entrances or directly across from the entrance to a major ride, like Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom, or the Great Movie Ride and the Rock n Roll Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The pressed coin patterns usually reflect the park’s individual theme. Epcot coins have more of an international flair while Animal Kingdom coins feature characters from the Lion King. In addition to the Disney characters, some of the more popular rides are featured as well. If you find a pressed coin machine in one of the major Disney World gift shops, chances are they might sell a Disney pressed coin passport as well, for easy storage of those special Disney World memories.

Don't let scams and identity theft ruin your honeymoon

The excitement of getting married doesn't end after the rice has been thrown, the cake has been cut and the presents opened. For most couples, the next stop is the honeymoon.

Wherever you go, the last thing you want is for your trip to be interrupted by problems. However, you can take steps to protect yourself.

Identity theft is a threat that we all face, even at home. But when you travel somewhere new -- particularly to foreign destinations -- you need to be extra vigilant to safeguard against it.

To give yourself the highest level of protection, consider a program like ID Patrol, from Equifax. The service monitors your credit file for suspicious changes and gives you 24/7 access to trained ID theft resolution specialists.

Flights can be cancelled or circumstances might arise that make it impossible for you to travel. That's just one reason that it's a good idea to have travel insurance. It can also be invaluable if you lose your luggage or are injured on your trip.

Knowledge is the first commandment of safe travel, but it helps to have back-up like ID theft prevention and travel insurance for situations beyond your control.

How accurate are Walt Disney World wait times?

There’s a reason why Disney’s Fast Pass is so popular at Walt Disney World—they really do cut down on the amount of time guests spend in line, but just how accurate are those wait times?

If the wait lines are rather short, around 10 minutes, the prediction is pretty accurate. That is especially important for rides like It’s a Small World at Magic Kingdom where little babies and toddlers might not feel like waiting for an extended amount of time. But what if the wait time is listed as 75, 90, or even 110 minutes? Sometimes those long wait times are pretty accurate, but when Disney decides to estimate the wait, they tend to err on the side of overestimating instead of underestimating.

In other words, a 75 minute wait might clock in at closer to 60 minutes, especially if it’s earlier in the day. That’s still a long wait, especially for young children, but at least it doesn’t exceed everyone’s expectations. Sometimes a lengthy wait time is posted and guests will find themselves on the ride in half the time, making it a pleasant surprise.

The only places that don’t post a wait time are the restaurants and concession stands. When dealing with the food orders of so many guests at the same time, even Mickey Mouse can’t make an accurate estimate, so the park doesn’t try to do it—although that might end up where you spend the longest amount of time in line.

Eco-Friendly Florida Golf Courses

Concerned about golf's effect on the natural environment? Book an Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary Golf Course through Tee Times USA and know that you are making a conscious choice to play "green" when you step up to the green. Florida has several Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary courses. Play them and you can count on seeing an abundance of natural flora and fauna that sets these courses apart.

This is because The Audubon Signature Program provides comprehensive environmental planning assistance to new developments. The program helps landowners and developers design for the environment so that both economic and environmental objectives are achieved. Once construction is complete, involvement in an Audubon Signature Program ensures that managers routinely apply sustainable resource management practices in the long-term stewardship of the property. Please consider playing these highly recommended golf courses that have made the investment and commitment to become Audubon Certified on your next Florida golf trip.

Florida Golf Courses at Audubon's Bronze Level: PGA Golf Club Port St. Lucie, Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood.

Florida Golf Courses at Audubon's Silver Level: Old Corkscrew GC in Estero, Eagle Creek in Orlando and Juliette Falls in Dunnellon, Sarasota National GC in Venice.

Florida Golf Courses at Audubon's Gold Level: WCI's Raptor Bay GC in Bonita Springs, WCI's Pelican Preserve in Ft. Myers, and WCI's Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club in Naples.

Rainy Day Walt Disney World

During the summer months, the stifling heat of the mid-morning gives way to brief but powerful thunderstorms. For many, the rain is a welcome respite from the hot temperatures, and the water evaporates rather quickly, but Walt Disney World visitors might want to be prepared for these sudden downpours.

Walt Disney World is more than happy to sell visitors thin rain ponchos in the major gift shops, so even if you don’t want to be bothered by carrying around an umbrella, you do have an alternative to getting soaked. A large garbage bag also does the trick, especially if you are bringing your own stroller to the park, and end up parking it outside while you get in line for a ride (because that’s usually when the thunderstorm hits and soaks the stroller). To prevent this from occurring, cover the empty stroller with a garbage bag tarp ahead of time.

Central Florida is the lightning capital of the world, so the Disney water parks will shut down temporarily if there is any lightning in the area. This is for the safety of the guests, so get out of the water immediately if an announcement is made. Fortunately, a long and drawn out rainy day is a rare occurrence in the Sunshine State, and even on those days when you do get caught in the rain, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen.

What is the right age for children to enjoy the Orlando theme parks?

Is there a “right” age for children to enjoy a trip to the Orlando attractions? Do families have to wait until their youngest child is “old enough” to do Disney? The short answer is no waiting required; Walt Disney World is truly an all ages resort, but as kids get older they can definitely progress their way through the Orlando theme parks.

Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World is best suited families with very small children. You will see far more babies and toddlers here, and an impressive parking lot of strollers in front of such mellow rides as It’s a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean. Epcot’s World Showcase also works well for napping youngsters where the emphasis is on food and atmosphere instead of waiting in line for thrill rides. All of the Orlando theme parks have ample diaper changing stations and at least one quiet area for nursing mothers.

As those tots advance into school age and beyond, they can enjoy bigger rides like Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Once the strollers have been put away, Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure is well suited for coaster loving kids. Keep in mind that the height requirements for most of the larger coasters are at least 48” or even 51” minimum.

Even though babies and toddlers can be seen at any of Orlando’s four waterparks—Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, Aquatica and Wet ‘n Wild—these theme parks are probably best suited for older children who can swim fairly well and are tall enough to enjoy the larger slides. Swim diapers are required for any waterpark guest who isn’t potty trained.

Orlando’s theme parks can accommodate guests of any size, but the most important thing that parents of young children can do is to pace themselves, give the little ones a chance to nap in the afternoon, and keep everyone hydrated as they make their way through the parks.
