Walt Disney World tip: Reducing the wait

Who wants to spend the better part of an hour waiting in line for a theme park ride? There are a few ways that visitors can reduce their wait times at Walt Disney World.

Disney's Fast Pass can cut down the wait time in half for many of Disney World's most popular rides, like Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom, Test Track at Epcot, Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Attractions that accept Fast Pass are listed on the park maps. If you already know what your "gotta ride it" attractions are going to be, go to the ride first to get the Fast Pass, then return at your designated one hour window of time, which will probably be a couple hours later. It's one extra step to take, but considering that the Fast Pass is free, it is worth the effort.

If you don't mind missing a parade, the ride lines shorten considerably whenever a parade is winding its way through one of the parks. You can even catch the beginning of the parade, then slip away before the crowd breaks up. Another way to reduce the wait is to visit Walt Disney World during off peak season, or wait until the park is about to close to attempt getting on one of the big rides.

At least one thing can be said about the magic of Disney regarding lines--you'll never have to wait long for a bathroom in the House of Mouse.

SeaWorld Helps Families Reconnect with $5 Tickets for Kids

Summer is the perfect time for reconnecting with family and friends and making memories that will last a lifetime. And now, SeaWorld Orlando is rolling out an offer that comes at the perfect time for vacations and allows families the chance to make a real difference for wildlife conservation.

Now through December 31, with each full-paid, SeaWorld Orlando single-day, adult admission purchased online, any child age 12 and under gets a $5.00 admission, all of which goes to fund non-profit organizations that are working right now on wildlife conservation projects. Families even can choose which wildlife conservation effort receives their donation.

Complete details are available at SeaWorldCares.com.

“This offer makes it easy for families and friends to reconnect during a vacation, a getaway or even just a day trip to one of our parks,” said Jim Atchison, President and Chief Executive Officer for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. “At SeaWorld, families experience amazing up-close animal connections that can’t be found any place else. And we believe a greater respect for the world we share follows a visit to one of our parks.”

And with so much new to do at all of the SeaWorld parks, there’s never been a better time to visit.

At SeaWorld Orlando, fans can brave Manta, an all-new flying roller coaster and the only one of its kind in the world. It’s a seamless blend of up-close animal encounters with a head-first, face-down thrill ride that’s sure to top the must-see lists again.

This summer, the nights are cooler and the atmosphere is hotter during SeaWorld AfterDark, when the park transforms daytime favorites into nighttime spectacles.

SeaWorld AfterDark showcases the park in a whole new light, with a nighttime
rock ‘n' roll extravaganza, a high-energy Shamu show, a hilarious sea lion show and a mystifying fireworks finale. That's in addition to being able to experience all that's awesome day and night, like Manta, up-close animal encounters and spectacular shows. SeaWorld AfterDark begins May 29 and continues through August 15.

Whether day or night, SeaWorld Orlando is the place to be this summer for a one-of-a-kind experience.

“We know the economy’s been tough for everyone, but more than ever before, everyone needs to spend time together,” Atchison said. “We think families also will have fun deciding which wildlife conservation project gets their donation, too. It’s a wonderful way for kids to learn about the work that goes on to save animals in the wild.”

For important details on this offer and to buy tickets, go to SeaWorldCares.com.

Walt Disney World tips: Restaurant reservations

Ever think about strolling up to the Crystal Palace restaurant (pictured) at Walt Disney World just to inquire how long the wait will be? Think again-- Disney World's most popular restaurants are booked days--sometimes weeks--in advance, especially during the busy summer travel period.

Restaurants that feature character dining, such as the Crystal Palace or the Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom, are rarely available for walk-in customers, and if they are, you are more than likely to have a reservation time right before the park closes. By calling 407-WDW-DINE at least one week or more in advance, your party can get reserved seating. When making a reservation through 407-WDW-DINE, keep the following travel tips in mind:
  • Larger parties (usually eight or more people) are often told that the restaurant cannot guarantee that everyone will sit together. Disney usually manages to find a way to accommodate everybody in the end, but you've been warned.

  • Don't expect to be seated immediately at your appointed time. Reserved seating at any of the Disney World restaurants usually means a 15 minute wait from the moment you check in.

  • Make sure that everybody from your party is present when the hostess seats your group. Disney will not seat incomplete parties, and you could lose the reservation. For a dining companion who is running just a few minutes late, be prepared to say, "He's in the bathroom."

Main Street Electrical Parade returning to Magic Kingdom

Earlier this year Disney announced that the Main Street Electrical Parade will return to the Magic Kingdom for a limited time as part of their “Summer Nightastic!” entertainment package. The Main Street Electrical Parade is expected to resume in June 2010 for the first time since 2001.

The Main Street Electrical Parade at Magic Kingdom is fondly remembered by millions of Walt Disney World visitors who watched the spectacle of lights in Florida before the parade floats were moved to Disney’s California Adventure park in 2001, and this summer the Main Street Electrical Parade will return to delight audiences of all ages once again.

Since 2001, Magic Kingdom has presented the SpectroMagic parade on select nights, which has similar music and special effects featuring Disney characters waving from the parade floats. SpectroMagic had its first run at the Magic Kingdom in 1991 – 1999, before resuming in 2001. The Main Street Electrical Parade was a regular feature at Magic Kingdom from 1977 – 1991, and has not been seen at Walt Disney World since its brief comeback from 1999 – 2001.

LEGO Imagination Center at Downtown Disney

One of the most popular locations in Downtown Disney for young families is the LEGO Imagination Center located in the Disney Marketplace area. Kids are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild as they race LEGO cars, construct their own LEGO creations or romp around the preschool playground area just outside the building entrance--there’s even an overhang in case of stormy weather.

Inside the LEGO Imagination Center, there are life-size LEGO displays (and plenty of opportunities to pose in front of them) build your own LEGO kits and computer kiosks where LEGO fans of all ages can play video games. There is even a computer screen that allows kids to hold up boxes from select LEGO sets to see what the finished product will look like.

No purchase is necessary to enjoy all of the “attractions” within the LEGO Imagination Center, although if the lines to the cash register are any indication, there are plenty of purchases that are inspired by this unique shop.

Downtown Disney

A stroller-friendly shopping, dining and entertainment district with free parking (if you don’t mind hunting for a parking spot on a Friday or a Saturday night), Downtown Disney might be one of the main reasons why many Orlando visitors don’t need to venture far from Disney property. Over the years Downtown Disney has undergone a few changes; the most notable one being the closing of the Pleasure Island nightclub district within Downtown Disney, which is currently being reworked into a more family oriented area,

On Downtown Disney’s West Side, visitors can enjoy a performance of Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba, engage in interactive arcade adventures at Disney Quest (where the dim lights can make you feel as if it is nighttime even in the middle of the day), dine at Planet Hollywood or even catch a first run feature film at the AMC 24 Theater. The guests who visit this side of Downtown Disney tend to have older children who can fully appreciate these attractions.

On the other side of the Pleasure Island area (which still has several food and beverage establishments that are open for business until the grand reopening in 2011) is the most crowded area of Downtown Disney, known as Disney Marketplace. This is where all of the major themed restaurants can be found, from the T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure, Rainforest Café, Fulton’s Crab House, the Portobello Italian restaurant plus a very popular McDonald’s, which is rumored to be closing down to accommodate a Guatemalan fast food chain known as Pollo Campero.

Families who come to the Disney Marketplace to eat also find themselves spending a lot of time with their kids purchasing souvenirs at the World of Disney store—the largest Disney character store in Walt Disney World Resort—or the nearby Lego Imagination Station, where children of all ages can be found playing with Lego sets or climbing through the preschool playground area. No matter what you are in the mood for after a day at the Disney theme parks, Downtown Disney delivers.

Miracle on the Hudson First Officer at Fantasy of Flight's Splash-In

On Jan. 15, 2009, Americans everywhere were glued to their televisions as they watched an airplane float precariously in the Hudson River with its passengers packed onto its wings, awaiting rescue.

On Thursday, April 15, guests at Fantasy of Flight's first-ever "Splash-In" BBQ lunch can hear firsthand about the harrowing ordeal and heroic rescue from Jeff Skiles, First Officer to Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III on US Airways Flight 1549, during the historic "Miracle on the Hudson."Back by popular demand for the third year in a row, Fantasy of Flight will once again host the "Splash-In" portion of the 36th Annual SUN 'n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, held in nearby Lakeland, Fla. April 13-18.

"Splash-In" will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Skiles, 50, was at the controls with Captain Chesley Sullenberger when the Airbus A320 jet experienced multiple bird strikes and lost power to both engines shortly after taking off from New York City's LaGuardia Airport. Captain Sullenberger safely landed the airplane on the chilly waters of the Hudson River just west of midtown Manhattan.

Of the 150 passengers and five crew members on board, only a few received minor injuries. Fantasy of Flight creator and founder Kermit Weekswill pick up Skiles at the SUN 'n FUN Fly-In in his amphibious Grumman Duck at 10 a.m. and fly him to Fantasy of Flight to the delight of "Splash-In" guests anxiously awaiting their arrival to Fantasy of Flight's Lake Agnes. Skiles will then speak to guests about his role in the heroic NY landing at a BBQ lunch. Cost of the BBQ lunch is $20 plus tax and does not include admission to Fantasy of Flight and "Splash-In," which are priced separately.

Tickets are available for all of the events at www.fantasyofflight.comor by calling 863-984-3500. Jeff Skiles started flying at the age of 16 and to date has logged more than 20,000 hours as a pilot. His mother and father - both pilots - introduced him to flying at an early age. He has spent the past 24 years as a First Officer and Captain for US Airways and currently serves as the Vice President of the Coalition of Airline Pilots' Associations (CAPA).

Jeff also enjoys recreational aviation and currently owns (and flies) a WACO Cabin biplane. He resides in Oregon, Wis., with his wife and three children. "Splash-In" at Fantasy of Flightis just one portion of the SUN 'n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, which has been dubbed "Spring Break for Pilots." The one-day event specifically celebrates seaplanes and other amphibious aircraft, as dozens of seaplane pilots use Fantasy of Flight's sparkling Lake Agnes as their chosen landing strip.

This "fly-in within a fly-in" will include the amazing spectacle of water take-offs and landings as well as competition flying, spot landing, a "bomb drop" contest and slaloms with floatplanes and flying boats. The "Splash-In" is included in the attraction's guest admission price which is $28.95 for adults and $14.95 for children, ages 6-15, plus 7 percent sales tax. Fantasy of Flight is pleased to offer SUN 'n FUN attendees $5 off regular admission to the aviation-themed attraction with proof of admission to SUN 'n FUN. SUN 'n FUN attendees must show 2010 SUN 'n FUN proof of purchase (receipt or wristband) at the Fantasy of Flight admissions desk to receive this special offer.

Offer is good for multiple visits and expires May 31, 2010. Not valid with any other discount, special event or annual pass. "Splash-In" hours are 10 am - 5 pm. SUN 'n FUN guests who do not wish to visit Fantasy of Flight will be charged $5 for parking and admission to the "Splash-In."

Visitors who do not wish to visit Fantasy of Flight, and are not SUN 'n FUN guests, may pay $10 for parking and admission to the "Splash-In."Guests are transported by shuttle to and from Fantasy of Flight and SUN 'n FUN headquarters at Lakeland Linder Field throughout the event. For more information about SUN 'n FUN, to purchase admission or to register attendance by seaplane, visit www.sun-n-fun.org.

The April event is the primary source of funding for SUN 'n FUN's expanding year-round aviation education programs including operation of the Florida Air Museum, the state's "Official Aviation Museum and Education Center," which is also supported through grants from the Division of Historical Resources and Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Department of State. Omaka Rocka Now Open at SeaWorld's Waterpark, Aquatica

It’s Omaka Rocka -- an all-new waterslide with unique thrills, high-speed tubes and half-pipe funnels that’ll have everyone splashing and sliding frontward, backward and climbing the walls – and a new after-2 p.m. pass good for unlimited admission through the rest of the year.

Omaka Rocka is a waterslide taste of half-pipe, near-vertical thrills previously experienced only by daring skateboarders and snowboarders. Riders speed down flumes into massive funnels, sliding high up one side and then the other, rocking back and forth, feeling a sensation of near weightlessness. Coming out of the funnel, they’ll skim into a drenching splashdown and then find themselves wanting to do it all over again.

Aquatica’s After 2 p.m. Pass means unlimited Aquatica thrills and fun and no black out dates for the rest of 2010, all for $49.95, adult and kids – only slightly more than a day’s admission. There’s no better way to hit Orlando's coolest beach – and rock the all-new Omaka Rocka – again and again, all year long. The After 2 p.m. Pass is perfect for weekend play with the family or during the week with friends.

Aquatica is a one-of-a-kind waterpark that could only come from SeaWorld. Inspired by a whimsical take on the South Seas, Aquatica immerses guests in the playfulness of the sea, taking them in, over and under the water with the world’s most unique water rides and animal encounters. Aquatica mixes animal experiences, waters from serene to extreme, high speed waterslide thrills and wide, sandy beaches to create a day of non-stop fun.

To learn more about Aquatica, Omaka Rocka or to buy an After 2 p.m. Pass, visit AquaticaBySeaWorld.com.

Orlando area hospitals

The last thing that anyone wants to have happen on vacation is an unexpected trip to the hospital, but Orlando has a number of high quality hospitals in the region if travelers find themselves in a situation where they need to go to the emergency room.

Florida Hospital is comprised of eight campus locations, including Orlando, Altamonte Springs, Apopka, Celebration, East Orlando, Kissimmee, and Winter Park. The main Orlando campus is located on E. Rollins Street just off of North Orange Avenue; most of the major hospitals in the Orlando area can be accessed off of Interstate 4’s Princeton Ave. exit on the east side of the expressway. (Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies usually caters to local residents requiring long-term treatment or maternity services.

Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is central Florida’s only level one trauma center, so accident victims necessitating “flight for life” services are brought to ORMC. To reach ORMC from the Orlando attractions, take I-4 East to Exit 81BC at Kaley Avenue; the hospital is located off of Orange Avenue.

For non-emergency services, Florida Hospital operates a number of Centra Care walk-in clinics throughout the Orlando area. And although nobody wants to spend any part of their vacation at a walk-in clinic or hospital, it is always good to know that the services are there when people need them.

Florida Hospital Centra Care

The last thing anyone wants to deal with on their Orlando area vacation is an accident or a bad case of the flu, but if the unexpected does happen and you do need a walk-in clinic in the Orlando area, there are 19 Florida Hospital Urgent Care locations—known as Centra Care—which treat local residents as well as out-of-town visitors.

A full listing of locations and hours are available at the Centracare.org Web site. Hours vary from location to location, but the Lake Buena Vista Centra Care (pictured) that is closest to Disney property has later hours to cater to ill and injured tourists (Walt Disney World even offers a free shuttle to this location for guests who cannot be adequately treated at one of the theme parks’ first aid stations). X-rays, stitches, and prescriptions are available at these sites to avoid the added expense and time involved in visiting a local emergency room.

The Lake Buena Vista Centra Care is located at 12500 South Apopka Vineland Rd., Orlando, FL 32836, and the hours of operation are weekdays from 8:00 a.m. – Midnight and weekends 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Other Centra Care locations that are close to the tourist areas (but with shorter office hours) include the Sand Lake Road location (a few miles from Florida Mall) and the Kissimmee Centra Care on US 192.

Rosen Hotels on International Drive

Once guests at the Quality Inn International check in and see their guest rooms, they may just think they’ve checked into a much more expensive luxury hotel. Extensive renovations at the hotel were completed March 1, with every guest room receiving all new furniture that was made in America, as well as new carpet, drapes, luxurious pillow-top mattresses and stylish, yet comfortable bedding.

The Quality Inn International is the third of the four Rosen Hotels & Resorts leisure properties to receive an “extreme hotel makeover.” Renovations to the Quality Inn Plaza and Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista were completed in late 2009, while the Rodeway Inn will be completed this summer. Total renovations for the four leisure properties are expected to top $30 million.

The newly renovated rooms at the Quality Inn International feature a warm, inviting and comfortable color palette using soothing shades of gold, russet and accents of green. The hotel listened to guest requests and feedback — adding a beautiful traditional wardrobe with distinctive molding in warm chestnut tones, designer doors to close off the vanity area for added privacy, a fully upholstered lounge chair and an ergonomic work area. Careful attention was paid to serviceable lighting in the room with finishes in bronzes with ivory shades that included convenience plugs. The hotel has also added new amenities such as complimentary wireless Internet service and a complimentary programmable safe that’s large enough to accommodate a laptop. The family-friendly hotel still offers in-room refrigerators, microwaves and coffee makers. Fully accessible ADA rooms are also available.

Refurbishments have not only made the rooms more comfortable and contemporary for guests, but have also made the hotel more eco-friendly. These practices include, but are not limited to, water conservation measures by installing low flow plumbing fixtures and implementing a linen reuse program, and energy efficiency achieved by installing compact florescent (CFL) bulbs in all guestroom lamps and light fixtures. The waste reduction criteria are met by providing the opportunity to recycle, purchasing items in bulk, purchasing recycled materials and by recycling ink and toner cartridges. In addition, the carpet fiber used is made of reclaimable and sustainable nylon. At the end of useable life of the carpet, it will be recycled into new fiber to avoid ending up in land fill.

The Quality Inn International offers 728 luxuriously appointed, “semi-suite” guest rooms outfitted with two double beds. A swimming pool, video arcade and gift shop offer downtime from the theme parks, while a full-service buffet-style restaurant, sports bar and lounge, and late night mini-market/deli offer plenty of onsite dining options. The hotel continues to offer its incredibly popular kids Eat Free program (children ages 9 and under receive complimentary breakfast and dinner buffets when accompanied by a paying adult).

The hotel is located in the heart of the Orlando attractions area on International Drive and is convenient to many shopping, dining and entertainment options including Pointe Orlando. Complimentary, scheduled shuttle service to Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando and Wet N’ Wild is also available for guests (reservation required). Nearby, Rosen Hotels and Resort's own Shingle Creek Golf Club is open for play, with complimentary transportation provided to and from the course.

Quality Inn International is located at 7600 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32819. For more information, call 800-825-7600 or visit orlandoqualityinn.com .

Celebrating a 35th anniversary, Rosen Hotels & Resorts has grown from 256 to more than 6,300 rooms, approximately six percent of the total guest rooms in Central Florida. Today, the Rosen family of hotels, which includes the award-winning convention properties Rosen Plaza, Rosen Centre and Rosen Shingle Creek, and four leisure properties in the Orlando tourist corridor, including the Quality Inn International, Quality Inn Plaza and Rodeway Inn International and Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista, remain committed to providing outstanding value for all guests. For more information about Rosen Hotels & Resorts, visit www.rosenhotels.com.

Some of the projects are still a "work in progress" but there is one grand opening that will define the future of Universal Studios Orlando for years to come.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the much-anticipated grand opening at Universal Studios, which is slated for June 18, 2010. The commercials for this attraction are already airing in the Orlando market, promising a whirlwind tour through Harry's Alma Mater Hogwarts.

Another new attraction that's scheduled for this year is the Omaka Rocka ride at SeaWorld's water park, Aquatica. There hasn't been as much fuss about this new attraction (especially in light of the recent tragedy at SeaWorld involving the death of a killer whale trainer) but expect to see some excitement when the weather warms up.

Meanwhile at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, the theme park's Fantasyland is undergoing a major renovation, taking most of Mickey's Toontown with it and adding a lot more opportunities to see the Disney Princesses. Also at Magic Kingdom, the iconic Space Mountain has a new look after undergoing some major updates in 2009.

What used to be Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney still being transformed into a more family-friendly area. The Virgin Megastore shut down last year and the popular McDonald's (located between the T- Rex restaurant and Lego store) is in the process of being converted into a Latin American fast food chain, Pollo Campero.

Some of the other changed at the Orlando theme parks might be less obvious, but there is always something new to look forward to on your next trip to Orlando.

Lake Buena Vista, FL

A lot of travelers refer to Orlando, FL as the site of Walt Disney World, but the “House of Mouse” is actually located in an Orange County municipality known as Lake Buena Vista, so if your hotel is located in Lake Buena Vista, you are actually staying on Disney property and can enjoy the benefits of being only a few minutes away from Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and rest of the attractions that the Disney World resort has to offer.

Lake Buena Vista has the unique distinction of being a town that everyone wants to visit—but not a lot of people live here. The only residents of Lake Buena Vista—there were less than 20 residents counted in the 2000 census—are Disney employees that live in a small community on Royal Oak Court, north of Downtown Disney. The only other Disney-owned town in Orange County is the neighboring municipality of Bay Lake, which also has a population about of 20 people based upon the 2000 census data.

Both Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake were incorporated in the late 1960s when the Walt Disney Company purchased large tracts of land for the future site of the Disney World resort. Just a few miles east of Lake Buena Vista is the Disney-planned town of Celebration, where the focus is on townhomes and single family housing as opposed to hotel units.
