Destin Night Life- Club Overboard

We had some guest come in town this week and they really wanted to see the Destin Nightlife. We started the night with a few drinks and appetizers from Bone Fish. Bone Fish offers a chance for a mature sophisticated crowd to get out and have a good time. After a few hours of drinking and some great food we decide to give Club Overboard a chance in Downtown Destin. If you are looking for cheap drinks and a chance to dance this may be the place for you. The average age group in this bar seemed to be 18-30. They have 3 separate rooms with a DJ in 2 of them and a live band playing rock music outside. Club Overboard also offers a "Power Hour". Between 11:30-12:30 all well drinks and draft beers are only $1. Both places we went to were a very different crowd but we felt welcome at both. Be sure to check out http://www.doitindestin.com/ for more Destin Attractions and Night Life.

Congo River Miniature Golf

Congo River Golf is a miniature golf course with a bit of Floridian flair: before starting their golf game on one (or both) of the 18 hole putt-putt courses, customers can feed some baby alligators--from a safe distance, of course. Who knew that gators liked hot dogs?

Congo River has four locations in the Orlando area: Altamonte Springs, Kissimmee, and two in Orlando on International Drive. The I-Drive locations are only about two blocks from each other; one is right next to Wet 'n Wild and the other is just between Universal Blvd. and Kirkman Road on the west side of I-Drive.

At the larger Congo River location (closest to Wet ‘n wild) guests can golf the easier "Stanley" course, or the slightly more challenging "Livingstone" course, both of which include tunnels, waterfalls, tricky embankments and a few hidden symbols along the way. Golfers who can locate all five clues as part of the exploration game will receive a scratch-off game card with a chance at winning a free golf game or a gift shop discount.

Considering how many attractions there are in and around International Drive, Congo River Adventure Golf offers some fun in the sun at a pretty reasonable price.

Rainy Day In Destin

Sometimes it happens. It does rain down in Destin. Today was one of the few wet days. When you plan a trip to the beach bad weather is not something you want to deal with. When we get stuck with a rainy day we try and come up with activities that will help us make the most of it. Today we took a trip to the Air Force Armament Museum on Eglin AFB. This museum is just a quick 25 minute car ride from Destin. You do not have to be military to visit the museum. The admission is based solely of donations. The museum features tons of planes on the exterior as well as few inside. There is also a large collection of weapons, bombs, and other interesting items. We head to the Armament Museum at least once a year. It is informative for adults and a lot of fun for children. Be sure to try the astronaut ice cream in the gift shop. For more information on this museum or other Destin Attractions visit our site at http://www.doitindestin.com/.

Orlando's Best Kept Secret Shares All

Each year Ad 2 Orlando provides advertising and public relations support to a local non-profit organization. This year, Orlando Day Nursery was selected.

Orlando Day Nursery (ODN) was founded in 1921, just after World War I had ended and many mothers found themselves widows. It was this need that encouraged the formation of ODN. Today, ODN is Orlando’s oldest non-profit child care facility and still honors its original mission to help the less fortunate in Central Florida by offering a safe and healthy environment with quality care and education for young children.

This event will present the new campaign to new and existing Ad 2 Orlando and ODN supporters while raising funds for ODN’s upcoming needs.

WHAT: Orlando Day Nursery Campaign Launch & Fundraiser

WHEN: Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 6 to 9 p.m.

WHERE: BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, 4151 Conroy Road, Orlando, FL (across from the Mall at Millenia)

TICKETS & RSVP: Tickets are $20 and 100% of the ticket price will benefit Orlando Day Nursery. The ticket includes a buffet dinner. For ticket information, visit orlandodaynursery.org

Beach Weather is Here!

Today was a great day in Destin. The temperature was just shy above 80 degrees and there was not one cloud in the sky. The water was cold but refreshing and the sand was smooth and offered a great place to lay back and relax. If you are not in Destin at the moment now is the time to start planning your next vacation. On our Cheap Destin Hotels site we have just added Destin Weather. We offer a real time forecast as well average temperatures year round. Even if you are not planning on coming down in the next few days this tool should be useful. We have also updated the main photo on our site and added the sounds of the beach. Hopefully everyone will enjoy the new additions to our site.

Orange County Orlando

The name "Orange County" might conjure of images of California Dreamin' in other parts of the country, but in the Sunshine State Orange County is at the heart of Central Florida tourism, with Orlando serving as the county seat.

As the name suggests, Orange County used to be dominated by the citrus industry up until the early 1970s. The county's fortunes began to revolve around tourism after Walt Disney World opened in 1971 and several hard freezes in the 1980s damaged the orange crops to the point that it was no longer profitable to sustain the orange groves that used to line the rural landscape.

Unlike large northern cities surrounded by smaller suburban towns, Orange County has a considerable amount of unincorporated areas, many of which have an Orlando address. Orange County has over 1 million residents, with Orlando being the largest incorporated city. In addition to Orlando there are 12 other incorporated municipalities, including Winter Park, Maitland, and Lake Buena Vista (where Walt Disney World is located). There are three times as many unincorporated communities in Orange County; any green street sign with an orange on it lets visitors know that they are in unincorporated Orange County.

Wonder Works Orlando

It's hard to miss the WonderWorks attraction at the Pointe Orlando shopping, dining and entertainment center on International Drive (right by the Orange County Convention Center). The upside down building intrigues passers-by and lucky guests who enter WonderWorks are treated to a unique indoor attraction (a definite benefit during Orlando's steamy summer days) where all of the senses are fully engaged.

The first two levels of WonderWorks are filled with simulators and other amazing exhibits that will excite kids and adults. Guests are invited to land the space shuttle, pilot an F14 or F18 fighter jet, crawl into a life size replica of an astronaut's space suit, experience a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, design and ride their own virtual roller coasters (there is a 48 in. minimum height requirement) plus much more.

Wonder Works also has an assortment of video games, food and drink, lazer tag, and a show called the Outta Control Magic Comedy Dinner. Best of all, a hot day spent indoors at WonderWorks can be capped off by a warm, pleasant evening strolling around the shops and eateries at Pointe Orlando.

T-REX restaurant at Downtown Disney

The T. Rex restaurant is a relatively new addition to Downtown Disney. It opened in October 2008 in Downtown Disney’s Marketplace close to the upscale Fulton’s Crab House and the ubiquitous McDonald’s. The prehistoric theme is evident from the moment guests approach the entrance, with sort of a Jurassic Park meets Rainforest Café feel to the entire place.

Visitors enjoy their meals in oversized theme rooms, which include a blue-hued Ice Age room and a primordial coral reef. The first main dining room features an animatronic T. Rex and wooly mammoth, which come to life every few minutes while the lights are dimmed and meteors streak across the domed ceiling. And if that seems a bit larger than life, just wait until the dinosaur-sized portions arrived. Whether it’s a salad or a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, the generous sized portion will ensure that no one leaves hungry.

Like the Rainforest Café, there is a gift shop attached to the T. Rex restaurant, which even sells naturally-occurring, crystal-filled geodes that can be cut open in the store (after it’s been purchased, of course). Other interactive activities include computer touch screens with educational games and a Build-a-Dino workshop (much like the Build-a-Bear Workshop available in Florida Mall and other malls across the country). The kids might also enjoy digging for “fossils” in a sheltered excavation site (just remove your shoes before entering).

If you plan on making reservations, call the T-REX restaurant directly at (407) 828-8739, since this restaurant does not use the Disney dining reservation system used by most of the other restaurants on Disney property.

BUNDLE OF JOY: Baby colobus monkey born at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park

Walt Disney World Resort recently welcomed a black and white colobus monkey – the first of its species born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The infant arrived February 17 after a six-month gestation and may be seen along the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail with a group of five other colobus monkeys.

While the weight, size and gender are still unknown, animal care experts are encouraged by the amount of care given by first-time mother, Kabibi. “The baby was born looking healthy and vigorous,” said Rebecca Phillips, a primate manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. “We’re encouraged that the mother and baby seem to be adapting well.” At birth, colobus monkeys are covered in white fur that is gradually replaced with black hair matching the adults.

The monkeys are distinguished by their black body and white shoulders, backs and beard. The monkeys stand between 18- and 27-inches tall and weigh approximately 12 to 32 pounds. Unlike most primates, the colobus do not have thumbs, although they have long tails that help them navigate through the forest quickly. Kabibi came to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2008 as part the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, which manages genetic diversity among species through detailed records of individual animals.

Disney's Animal Kingdom also participates in AZA Species Survival Plans for several other animals, including elephants, cotton-top tamarins and okapi. Currently, approximately 65 colobus monkeys exist in AZA-accredited facilities around the United States.

Spring Fling Car and Truck Show

It is that time of year again! Custom cars from around the country flock to Panama City Beach for the annual Spring Fling Car and Truck show. We plan to attend and enter our vehicle as always. The show is geared towards a younger crowd but is always fun for car enthusiasts of all ages. If you are down in Destin this is an event you may want to check out. Last year there was a large turn out and even though a few of us had a little too much sun, it was well worth the 30 minute drive from Destin. The show runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Tickets are $10 a day or $15 for the weekend. If you have little ones you may want to go on Saturday over Sunday because Sunday features the Bikini Contest. For more information on this event or others in the area visit our Destin Events Calender.

Publix Orlando

Publix has a longstanding relationship with the city of Orlando; the Publix logo is a familiar sight in local shopping centers and the delivery trucks coming in from the company’s headquarters in Lakeland, FL, which lies between Orlando and Tampa. The neon sign in front of the Publix in Orlando’s College Park neighborhood is a local landmark that dates back to the 1950s.

Founded in 1930, Publix Super Markets is the largest and fastest-growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States. The first Publix was opened in Winter Haven, FL—a town that is best known for being the home of Cypress Gardens theme park. Today, there are over 1,000 Publix grocery stores nationwide, including stores in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood on Sand Lake Road and S.R. 535 (Apopka-Vineland Rd) near the entryway to the Walt Disney World Resort hotels, so that out-of-town visitors can get a taste of the place “where shopping is a pleasure.”

Wing Stop in Destin!

We ended up missing out on the concert series at Baytowne this week. We did however try out the new Wing Stop Restaurant in Destin. Generally we try and highlight non-chain restaurants but since it is new to the area and a smaller chain so we thought we would share our experience. We started our wing search online. Their site was pretty easy to use and it allowed us to place our order without having to call. I did call to make sure it went through and they had already started cooking our food. I asked them generally how long they need to know in advance and they let us know they only need 15 minutes to get it ready. We tried their family special which included 4 flavors, 50 wings, and 2 sides for only $39.99. We ordered carry out and took it back to our office. All 4 flavors of the wings are pretty good. The sides are about average. We ordered the fries and the bourbon baked beans. The taste of bourbon was very noticeable and the kids did not enjoy them at all. Overall we did enjoy the food. The effortless online ordering and having the wings waiting when we arrived made it extremely easy. Click here to visit their site. For more Destin Restaurants visit our sister site. The season has officially started so stay tuned for more updates!

Spring Break is here!

Today is officially the first week of Spring Break. Destin will have a influx of vacationers the next few weeks. Unlike our neighbors in Panama City, Destin is a family oriented Spring Break area. So if you are making last minute plans or if you are packing to head on down, do not fear the wild and crazy parties you see on TV.

This week we are planning to check out the free Concert Series in the village of Baytowne Wharf. Hopefully next week we will have some good photos to share. This is a weekly series so if you are in town I would recommend stopping by. We have also just updated our Destin Event Calender with more details of this event and others.

This year there are rooms still open and most companies are offering largely discounted rates on hotel rooms. When you book last minute you are sure to get the best deals. Check out our Cheap Destin Hotels site for the best Hotel rates in town.

New Blog for the Destin Area!

We have been designing websites for several years and we are fairly new to blogs. I know it almost seems outrageous that we are just now catching on. The current projects we are working on include Cheap Destin Hotels, Destin Vacation Deals, and Do It In Destin. These sites are not completed but they are up and running. Feel free to give us some ideas. We live in the local area and we decided we wanted to offer a FREE Concierge program as a supplement to our sites. Our idea is to use this blog to give insight into the local area. We plan to update weekly with important content to the Destin area. We want to highlight Destin events, attractions, and deals to start with. If you are a traveler to our area and you have a question about anything feel free to send it our way and we can get it addressed.

I caught this this two little girls with my camera in the street of Carbon
near Colon. They are collecting empty bottles.
They are too young for work and yet they became scavenger
Is there a Law were we can put their parent behind bars for not looking
to the welfare and basic needs of their children?

I forget to include the time. It is past 10pm already.

Typhoon Lagoon reopens March 21

Typhoon Lagoon, which has been closed for regular maintenance since November 1, will reopen on March 21. Since Walt Disney World has two water parks—Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach—one water park is always open while the other one is closed during routine maintenance during the winter months. Typhoon Lagoon is located near Downtown Disney, while Blizzard Beach is in the vicinity of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

No matter what time of year it is, there is always an Orlando water park open for business, although inclement weather is bound to shut down any outdoor water park. Both Wet ‘n Wild and Aquatica remain open during the winter months, although the parks’ operating hours may be shorter and the parks might be closed for maintenance on certain days. Always check the water park’s Web site to make sure which places are open if a water park is part of your itinerary for your next Orlando vacation.

Wolfgang Puck Grand Café

Guests are encouraged to “live, love, eat” at the Wolfgang Puck Grand Café on Downtown Disney’s West Side. Located across from the Virgin Megastore and only steps away from DisneyQuest and Cirque du Soleil, the Wolfgang Puck Grand Café combines family friendly dining with European style and a bit of Eastern flair.

This colorful café has an eclectic mix of entrees, ranging in price from $13.95 to over $25.00, and includes gourmet thin-crust pizzas from a wood-burning oven, pasta dishes, dinner-sized salads, rich desserts—plus an extensive sushi menu. Throughout the restaurant are framed reproductions of the late 19th century/early 20th century Puck Magazine, with a few clever illustrations featuring the Austrian-born celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck himself.

This three-level restaurant also offers fantastic views of Downtown Disney; guests who are seated next to the picture window can have a waterfront view of Downtown Disney’s Marketplace, as well as the former Pleasure Island, which is currently undergoing an extensive renovation this year.
