Orlando Deals: Worlds of Discovery Staycation Deals

Florida residents looking for Orlando deals can enjoy their own “staycation” with a little more money in their pocket by taking advantage of the Worlds of Discovery “Pick Two” program, which combines visits to any two of the Florida Worlds of Discovery – SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island – for only $79.95.

Newly opened this spring, Aquatica is Orlando’s newest water park, located on the south end of International Drive across the street from SeaWorld Orlando. With single day adult admission prices at $37.95 for Adventure Island, $41.95 for Aquatica, $67.95 for Busch Gardens and $69.95 for SeaWorld Orlando, the “Pick Two” program offers big savings on some of Orlando area’s biggest attractions.

The “Pick Two” deal is just one Orlando deal available for Florida residents. The popular “Pay for a Day” offer at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and SeaWorld Orlando has been extended through Labor Day. With a Fun Card, Florida residents can enjoy unlimited admission through the end of 2008 to either SeaWorld or Busch Gardens for the price of a single-day ticket.

Summer at the Orlando Science Center Museum

Summer may be winding down, but the Orlando Science Center museum still has some of the hottest exhibits in town. From now until October 12, the Rockwell’s America exhibit invites visitors to interact with three-dimensional dioramas of Norman Rockwell’s most famous cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post. With 20 theatrical environments, this is the largest Norman Rockwell/Saturday Evening Post exhibition ever created.

The Titanic—the Experience continues its special engagement at the Orlando Science Center. An admission ticket to this special exhibit allows visitors to embark upon a guided tour of Titanic artifacts that were originally displayed at the (now closed) Titanic exhibit on International Drive.

The Orlando Science Center museum is home to the world's largest Iwerks (extreme screen) domed theater and Digistar II planetarium, with 28,000 watts of digital sound. Currently the Dr. Phillips CineDome is showing several giant-screened features: Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure, Roving Mars, and Storm Chasers. For a 3-D experience without the funny glasses, this is as good as it gets. For more information about the Orlando Science Center, visit the museum’s Website at www.osc.org.

Walt Disney World Water Parks Offer More Fun in the Sun

Spending the entire day in a swimsuit is a pretty good idea when the normal high temperatures are in the 90s, which is why summertime is the peak season for Walt Disney World Water Parks. Parking at Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon is free of charge, and many Disney resorts offer shuttles directly to the parks.

In true Walt Disney World fashion, entering either one of the Disney water parks brings guests into another world. Blizzard Beach—near Disney’s Animal Kingdom—has a ski resort theme and features an actual ski lift to bring visitors to the top of Mt. Gushmore, a steep hill that resembles a downhill ski jump and is the focal point of Blizzard Beach. Cross Country Creek encircles the entire park, making it easy—and fun—to make your way across Blizzard Beach

Visitors entering Typhoon Lagoon—near Downtown Disney—are greeted by the sound of the park’s mammoth wave pool. Snorkel in Shark Reef, lounge around the entire park on an inner tube in Castaway Creek, or let the kids spend some quality time in Ketchakiddee Creek. With extended summer hours, either one of Walt Disney World’s water parks will keep visitors cool in the hot Florida sun.

Orlando Deals: Florida Resident Passes Save Money

Orlando’s biggest attractions—Disney, Universal, and SeaWorld—like to have return business, which is why Florida resident passes are such a popular and money-saving way for Florida residents to enjoy some of the Sunshine State’s most popular Orlando deals.

Each parent company’s Web site has numerous Florida resident pass offerings and park combinations. SeaWorld Orlando offers a “Pay for a day. Come back all year.” pass that is very popular with Orlando residents. It also has the option of add-ons for the nearby Discovery Cove, the brand new Aquatica water park, and Busch Gardens in Tampa.

Disney has numerous Florida Resident pass options and some of the best Orlando deals in town. The main difference between the Annual Pass and the Seasonal Pass is that the Annual Pass covers parking without any blackout dates, while the Seasonal Pass is cheaper but does not cover parking (at $11 a visit) and there are blackout dates for spring break, Christmas break, and most of the summer. During the summer there are special passes available for the Disney World water parks—Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach—if you visit after 2:00 p.m. Disney recently introduced a Disney Play 4 Days Pass for only $159 plus tax. This exclusive Florida resident pass provides four admissions to any of the four Walt Disney World® Theme Parks, one Park per day.

Universal Orlando has three options for its annual passes for Florida residents, plus a number of 2 day/2 park options that save visitors money if they order tickets online. Universal’s latest deal is the 2-Park Preferred Annual Pass with six months free. Florida residents receive an extra six months free on the purchase of a 2-Park Preferred Annual Pass with specially-marked cups of Coca-Cola from participating Mc Donald’s.

Winter Park a Delightful Orlando Area Excursion

Located just north of the city of Orlando, Winter Park is one of the oldest established communities in Central Florida. Chartered in 1887, Winter Park began as a winter refuge for wealthy Northerners. Today, it is best known for the boutique shops and outdoor bistros that line Park Ave., with the most tourist-friendly area stretching from the campus of Rollins College on the south end of Park Ave. to the historic Winter Park Country Club and Golf Course several blocks north.

Downtown Winter Park is also known for its art museums; the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art on North Park Ave. houses the world's most comprehensive collection of the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, which includes jewelry, pottery, paintings, art glass, leaded-glass windows, lamps, and the chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Closer to the Rollins College campus, the Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens enables art lovers to enjoy fine art and picturesque gardens at the same time. The Cornell Fine Arts Museum, right on the Rollins campus, is another example of Winter Park’s cultural gems.

Even though it is only a few miles from Orlando’s hottest attractions, Winter Park seems far removed from the O-town tourist crowds, making it the perfect place to spend a day gallery gazing, wine sipping, and people watching in Central Florida. Winter Park Orlando Florida

Orlando’s Best Dining Available at Walt Disney World

Some of the best restaurants in Orlando are at Walt Disney World, so it is extremely important to have reservations ahead of time. The operators at (407) WDW-DINE (939-3463) do a very good job of finding available tables at the various theme parks and resorts at Walt Disney World, including the popular character meals and dinner shows that keep young children entertained. Making a reservation at popular restaurants such as the Magic Kingdom’s Crystal Palace or the Polynesian Resort’s Ohana should be made weeks in advance, especially for a weekend date.

There are two things to keep in mind regarding dining reservations: 1) Priority seating still means that you might be waiting for up to 15 minutes before you get your table, and 2) The wait staff will not seat anyone unless your entire party is present. Orlando’s premier restaurant, Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, recently established a policy of accommodating guests ages 10 and up only, but the rest of Walt Disney World’s eateries are usually an all-ages affair, with plenty of stroller parking available in front of the restaurants.

It is capable of entertaining more than 4300 visitors per hour, and with the wheel rotating at a mere 9 inches per second, riders can enter and exit the ride while the wheel stays in continuous motion. As many as 40 passengers can ride in one of the 24 compartments at a time.

Great Wheel Corp., the Singapore-based company behind the local project, already operates the Singapore Flyer and is planning similar attractions in Beijing and Berlin. The Great Orlando Wheel is scheduled for completion in 2010.

Fun Spot: a Disney/Universal alternative

Fun Spot is a small attraction with "County Fair" attractions such as Go Karts, a ferris wheel, and few other kiddy rides. It is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary and is still a cheaper option than Disney. The girls, 10 and 11 y/o respectively enjoyed it and had a lot of fun, it will only entertain them about another year or two.

The small amusement park is showing its age and is in need of a makeover; and at $34.95 per, less than half the price of the mega-parks in Orlando, one would expect nicer facilities. But, it had some nice perks, such as FREE parking (WDW and Universal should take notice), free sodas ALL DAY, and friendly staff (even though some of them looked so bored I kept checking their safety-check routine out of habit). The game room makes the big McDonald's game-room on International Drive look pathetic and it was easier to accumulate tickets for prizes. So, in conclusion, this blogger gives Fun Spot value a C+ or B-; giving my daughters quality time with Daddy: PRICELESS.

Disney

Disney jacks up its one day ticket price to $75 a day staying slightly ahead of Universal and SeaWorld who are a just few dollars behind; and this does not include parking which is $11.OO, meals and drinks. Even for us Florida residents who sometimes are able to take advantage discounts, a day at the park for a family of four become a very pricey affair when you add the price of gas to get there. Of course, the Europeans are having a field day with the favorable currency exchange, assuring the parks profits will continue to soar. Sadly, I doubt the next president will be able to fix this anytime soon.

Cecils BBQ Orlando, Florida

Cecil's Texas Style BAR-B-Q
There’s always an argument about BBQ, and many cities and states have BBQ cook-offs to try to decide who the best is. Everyone has an opinion, that’s for sure. Well, here is ours…. Cecil’s Texas Style BAR-B-Q in Orlando.

We knew Cecil in Texas and enjoyed his “Q” there. BTW, Texas definitely has the best BBQ in the world! Just imagine how delighted we were to see this sign for Cecil’s in Orlando on S. Orange Avenue – see photo. Not believing it could be the same Cecil, we gambled on a visit and were delighted to find Cecil himself! We met his son Michael – great guy!

The brisket (brisquet?) is the best ever. So tender and flavorful, very Texas. How do they do it? The ribs, the chicken, the pork – well it’s all divine. And we’re not the only ones who think so. Just check out the line of hungry folks at lunch. It’s hugely popular! O, and don’t miss the jalapeño mashed potatoes.

Cecil’s have been seen on Roker on the Road, gotten cudos from Scott Joseph of the Orlando Sentinel, been named as one of the top 15 BBQ restaurants in the country by KS BBQ society “Bullsheet”, received people’s choice awards , and more……

Travelers and visitors to Orlando Florida frequently look for places where the locals eat, ‘cause they are tired of the same chain food experiences. Try this one! There is something here for everyone – don’t forget to get your free ice cream cone before you leave!

Beefy King, Orlando

Many people enjoy frequenting places that are family owned. Here is one that the whole family can enjoy in Orlando, Florida – near Colonial Mall… Beefy King. This eatery has been owned by the same family since 1968.

A FOODIE WINNER in 2007, they just celebrated their 40th anniversary by slicing prices – not just the beef on June 14, 2008! Of course, they had to limit quantities at the slashed prices, and promised to serve til they ran out! According to one family member, that didn’t take too many hours on the anniversary day.

Just look at the line of cars in the drive-through on Bumby Avenue and the line of people which started before opening and snaked around the inside of the restaurant like a line dance!

A live band provided entertainment but the sandwiches are what we all come for. Well, of course along with the milkshakes, the spuds (tater tots) and the wonderful horsey sauce and unique barbeque sauce.

Trust me on this one – you’ll be hooked and become one of the regulars, too. It is definitely an Orlando tradition.

Try it, you’ll love it.

Winter Park Florida

Amtrak - what a fun way to travel! A lot of people don’t realize how easy and affordable it is to transport your grandkid from his place to yours (and BACK HOME) – and SAVE GAS money! We discovered this option a couple of years ago and thought we’d share it with you. Lucky for us our grands live near enough a rail station to take advantage of this for a summer visit!

We have also opted to ride the rails ourselves, spending the night in a nice hotel near the train station, exploring the destination, and hopping the train home the next day! So what about taking a holiday trip now to visit Winter Park, Florida?

When you arrive at the Amtrak, Winter Park station, a great nearby hotel (walking distance) is the Park Plaza right on Park Avenue. Also nearby is the Best Western Mount Vernon Inn.

In the Winter Park, Florida area you’ll find Morse Museum of American Art, Rollins College, Park Avenue shopping and restaurants (of course), Hannibal Square, Cornell Fine Arts Museum and Full Sail Real World Education (University), Polasek Museum and Garden (American sculpture museum) and much much more.

Hear that whistle blowing!
